# Melanism in grey wolves caused by hybridization with dogs

The mutation that causes solid black pigmentation in the fur of wolves and coyotes results from hybridization with domestic dogs.  It is unknown if the mutation that causes melanism in wolves, dogs, and coyotes arose before or after domestication.
