# Status as a species is not a prerequisite for United States federal protection under the Endangered Species Act of 1973

The United States Endangered Species Act of 1973 includes multiple vulnerable subspecies and populations of native terrestrial animals.  Therefore, species status is not a prerequesite for federal protection.
